Does Coastal Decor Belong in the Mountains?

DSC_0770 titleDecorating magazines and catalogues often feature coastal decor as a summer look. But do touches of coastal decor have a place in a mountain home? That’s the question I have asked myself since moving to Our MT Nest from our longtime home in south Florida.

Having spent the greatest part of my life in Florida I was accustomed to incorporating tropical and coastal touches in my decor. But when this mountain home was our vacation-only abode, we never used any coastal touches in the decor. So, after moving here full-time, I wondered if it might look strange or out of place to incorporate a few summertime coastal touches. After all, our house is sitting on the side of a mountain surrounded by forest and inside, with all our shiplap wood walls and ceiling, it’s got more of a cabin look going than beach cottage.

DSC_0842ewI like to surround myself with beautiful decorative items that we truly love, and especially to include items that hold special significance.

DSC_0810ecwI have a collection of shells that hold special meaning. The shells were collected many years ago during beach excursions with my children when they were young.

I tried a few different vessels to hold the shells before finally settling on my Landon 5-Votive Tray Candle Holder from World Market that I first wrote about here when it was purchased last fall. It’s weathered wood seems the perfect compliment to the sea shells.

When I first I put the shells in the tray, they looked a bit too sparse, so I adde  a layer of sea glass filler under the shells. I like the way a few pieces of the sea glass peek out here and there.

DSC_0811ecwAmong the shells in the collection is a beautiful conch shell that was presented to me long ago by my son, whose love of fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, water skiing, and all other water pursuits started almost from birth.

DSC_0814ewThis little starfish ornament was given to us by Brown-eyed Girl and her new hubby, a momento from their honeymoon on St. Lucia.

DSC_0966ecwAnother coastal touch is this driftwood and glass piece that I purchased at the end of the summer season last year. It was a piece that “spoke my name” and I had been watching it all through the summer last year.

DSC_0969ecwSo when it was still available at the end of the summer season, and I could purchase it with a discount, I decided that it was meant to come home with me. I love the way the glass has been molded to fit perfectly over the shape of the driftwood. And I love the pale blue color of the glass.

This summer I decided to display my very special seashells and add other small touches of coastal decor whether they fit in the mountains or not! Each time I pass the shells, I smile remembering how they came to me. What do you think? Do touches of coastal decor belong here in the mountains?

Hi there…yes…a thousand times yes. It is your home, do what makes YOU happy! The way I see it is this…use the things you love…the designers, etc…who make the “rules” don’t live in your home, you do!
Enjoy! By the way…I love the shells with the sea glass underneath…I will try that myself!

Thank you so much for your comment. I agree with you that using what we love is the way to go. But I did notice that some things we brought with us from our Florida home really didn’t look or feel right here. But I look at my shell collection in the same way as a travel souvenir…they evoke happy memories…and I plan to continue to enjoy them!

I have to say “yes” as I include them in my summer decor in Colorado! There is no ocean for thousands of miles but since I spent almost my entire life in Florida, the beach holds a special place in my heart especially in summer. I love the memories that your collection brings into your home. Enjoy them for a couple more months until fall knocks on our doors.
